The question of gender inequality is perpetuated as soon as it is described in terms of “women/men” or “female/male”. Men are no less put upon with images and expectations than women. It may or may not be true that the role that society imposes on women is lower than the role imposed on men. But men are expected to be virile when they feel impotent, to be strong when they feel needy, to produce when they want to consume, to consume when they want to relax, to win when they don’t even want to play,
This is not a pity-party for men. Gender roles exist in our society (and every society I know anything about). If the goal is to make men and women “equal”, we must impose upon women the same expectations that we impose on men.
What most feminists are really after is not a society free of gender roles, but a society free of any imposed roles at all.
